Comfort Foods

Ooey Gooey Chocolatey Chip Cookies. Still warm from the oven. That twilight moment when they cease to be dough and qualify as cookie. Perfection.

And comfort.

Then there are folks who want something crunchy and salty: chips [just read a story where the MC would eat a whole bag or bags of Cheetos® when in distress.]

Then there’s good ol’ chicken noodle soup, hearkens to sick days and the red label can. At least for me. Laden with saltine crackers of course. The only time I like my crackers soggy. Comfort.

According to Wikipedia: “Comfort food is traditional food which often provides a nostalgic or sentimental feeling to the consumer, and is often characterized by a high carbohydrate level and simple preparation.” … “Further studies suggest that consumption of comfort food is triggered in men by positive emotions, and by negative ones in women.

I find that difference in gender response fascinating. I know when I’m stressed or down I crave CHOCOLATE. In pretty much any form. Then again, I crave chocolate basically 24/7.

It never would have occurred to me that comfort food is a response to feel-good day. Hubby [for those who have one] comes home from a good day at the office, or a great game of golf or a good catch on the river – and goes for the comfort food. I’m just intrigued by this.

So let’s take a look at what comfort is:

Comfort: verb com·fort \ˈkəm(p)-fərt\ to cause (someone) to feel less worried, upset, frightened, etc. : to give comfort to (someone)

1:  to give strength and hope to :  cheer; 2:  to ease the grief or trouble of :  console

This is why the male craving for comfort food is so baffling to me. By definition, comfort is alleviating a dis­-comfort. Perhaps, the male of the species is striving to hold onto a sense of comfort, cheer, or ease. Fellas, ya wanna weigh in here?

So what are some instances ladies when comfort food is required? I know what mine are, fatigue chief among them – and that’s been rampant lately as I’ve not been sleeping well. ERGH

Fellas, what are your happy-seeking-comfort food events?

Then here’s a thought, too, do you crave different comforts with different triggers? Or is it random? Me, it’s always the ooey gooey stuff, like, well, chocolate. And for the record, I’ve the makings of chocolate mint [Andes® of course] frosted cookie bars, and I may have to make them before bed tonight!!! Just so you know.

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup butter, softened

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 large eggs

2 cups NESTLE® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-    Sweet Chocolate Morsels

1 cup chopped nuts [I leave these out]


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. [I never set my oven that high, more like 325°]
  2. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon [or large gobs] onto ungreased baking sheets.
  3. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. [i MIGHT let ‘em stay in that long… ]

Of course, my all-time favorite variation is to substitute Andes® Mint chips!! MMMMM


Now, here’s a different angle. Cravings. I was told when I was a child that I had low blood sugar. I’ve also been told that used to be a catchall diagnosis. Regardless, that’s how I’ve eaten for [ahem] years and I’m very aware of when my blood sugar is low. I don’t consume much sugar in my daily intake. High in protein, but not so much the sugar. So it’s noticeable when it drops. Other than a Coke® the number one filler-upper for me is pasta! Preferably with cheese or some other rich and gooey [there’s that word again] sauce. Like, say, alfredo. Tortellini of course. Then there’s the shrimp that goes with the alfredo, and the broccoli that goes with the alfredo.


WRITING PROMPT: He’s a salty and crunchy sort of guy. She’s a sweet n sugary gal. For their first anniversary he takes her out for a night on the town. Beginning with dinner at Fish-n-Chips-n-Stuff. He’s a happy camper, right there in comfort food heaven. She, however….
