Chase by Glenn Haggerty

Today we’d like to welcome author, Glenn Haggerty, to the Inspired Prompt blog. Glenn recently released Chase, the third book in the Intense Book series, and we want to know more…

Glad you could join us, Glenn! Do you have any interesting writing rituals?

Glenn:  Once I was puzzling out a plot point and couldn’t make it work. When the brain fog descended, I called it a day, but since I was feeling like a couch potato too, I decided on a 30-minute workout on my stationary bike. I tried to forget the plot problem and just focus on the ride, but unexpectedly, ideas started popping up, and I suddenly had solutions. Now whenever I’m going for some serious creativity, I add a 30-minute bike ride to my schedule.

What is your book about?

Glenn:  In Chase, Tyler, a middle school newbie, watches helplessly as his friend, Jake, descends into drugs. With the help of a couple of classmates and encouraged by the local police, Tyler begins shadowing drug runners to rat out the methamphetamine dealer before his friend turns into a brain dead druggie. But Tyler has underestimated the power and raw evil that is about to be unleashed against him. There are lots of twists and turns and character surprises as Tyler and his friends come face to face with organized evil. Faith and courage are tested to the max, and many lessons are learned regarding life and friendships.

What is your favorite part of the book?

Glenn: That’s a tough question for an author! I won’t spoil the wrap-up, but I can say that the dramatic and I think surprising resolution to the opening scene is probably my favorite. Another is the scene where the hero, Tyler, gets blindsided at school by the glamour clique. He’d had an embarrassing encounter with a certain girl and had no clue what can happen in middle school when those things go public. I guess I can relate to that sense of helplessness and humiliation when you are roasted for something dumb that you did.

Is there a message in your book you hope readers will grasp?

Glenn: Yes, several. God doesn’t force people to do the right thing, so we can’t force anyone to do anything regarding matters of the heart. Bad company corrupts good morals. Sometimes you have to make tough choices about who to hang out with. On the other hand, using good judgment, consider giving someone another chance. If someone has broken your trust, you must forgive them, but then he or she should have to earn your trust back again. And, there is power in prayer, but God doesn’t always answer the way we might expect, sometimes it is yes, sometimes no, sometimes wait and sometimes another unexpected way.

“There they are.” Chase’s voice rolled up the slope. Even hollering his voice sounded flat and lifeless like someone had drilled a hole in his body, and his soul had leaked out.

Drugs infiltrate Tyler Higgins’ middle school turning ordinary kids into brain dead druggies. When his friend is infected, Tyler decides to cut the small town drug flow by ratting out the dealer before it’s too late.

Shadowing drug runners is risky business. A bowhunter has already disappeared, and Tyler’s true adversary remains veiled. After his first spying mission misfires, Audrey, his classmate, volunteers to help, but Tyler can’t imagine where this mission will lead. Everything goes sideways, but he doggedly follows the twisting trails, risking his friendships and his own neck. In the end, he isn’t sure who he can trust or if he can rescue anyone—including himself.

  1. Glenn, your book delivers a bundle of important messages for young people (and adults!). I’ve been teaching in a rural high school for 25 years and married to a state trooper for 31. Your story strikes a strong chord with me. Thanks for sharing it on Inspired Prompt today.
