3 Questions Wednesday with Jennifer Slattery

Welcome to another edition of 3 Questions Wednesday, with our returning guest, Jennifer Slattery. Jennifer is a writer and international speaker who’s addressed women’s groups, church groups, Bible studies, and other writers across the nation and authored six contemporary novels. Lets get started!

First question:

Who is your favorite author?

Jennifer: Oh, this is such a tough question! What genre? For Bible studies, Priscilla Shirer. That girl is amazing! For nonfiction … Probably Lysa Terkeurst. For fiction … I’m pretty eclectic, but maybe Nicholas Sparks? As far as special author friends, Jen Hallmark is a treasure I hold dear!

Great books by all those authors. And I’m sure “our” Jennifer appreciates your kind words.  Now here’s a fun question—

If you could write about anyone or anything fiction/nonfiction who or what would you write about?

Jennifer:  I’m not a historical writer, but I’ve always thought it’d be intriguing to get into Timothy’s (the young pastor of the church in ancient Ephesus) head. He lived and served during such a tough time, and yet he stood faithful and immovable.

He would be a wonderful character in a story. And what a challenge to write about his relationship with Paul. Last question—

If you could spend time with a character from your book or another book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Jennifer: I’m fairly certain Faith and I would become great friends. She likes coffee, bike riding, art … Though she might get annoyed at my complete lack of talent. Haha! I also get a kick out the old lady that lives in the parish house. She’s feisty, quirky, and hilarious!

If Paige and I got a chance to hang out, I’d want to go hiking and pick her brain regarding the Austin art culture and how she got into stained glass window restoration. If I got to spend time with the little old lady that lives on the church’s property, I’d probably want to bake. I have a feeling she’d create some rather interesting, though perhaps not edible, concoctions.

Baking and cookies sound yummy to me.  Thanks, Jennifer, for visiting us on 3 Questions Wednesday, and allowing our readers to know you better.

3 Questions Wednesday with Laurel Blount

Happy Wednesday! Today the Inspired Prompt welcomes Love Inspired author, Laurel Blount. We’re so happy you could join us. First question:

Can you describe yourself in three words?

Laurel: I think I’d go with curious, humorous and friendly! I am fascinated by so many things—and I absolutely love to learn. I also love to laugh—I so appreciate people and books that make me laugh out loud. And finally—I’m mutt-puppy friendly—I  truly enjoy getting to know new people.

I agree. I loved getting to know you at the Blue Lake Christian Writer’s Retreat! Now about travel…

Someone offers you a fully-paid writing research trip to any place you desire to go. Where would it be and why?

Laurel: That’s such a great question. I was born in Georgia, and I’ve lived all my life here. If I could have a fully funded writing research trip, I’d want to buy an RV and spend a year traveling around the USA, lingering in various towns to soak up the local atmosphere so that I’d have memories and experiences to draw on in order to write authentically about other parts of our wonderful country.

What a great idea! Last question:

If someone made a movie of your life, what would be the theme song?

Laurel: Oooh. That’s a hard one! I think if I had to choose, it would be Brave by Nichole Nordeman. That song was one I listened to over and over again during one of the biggest changes in our life—the adoption of our youngest daughter from China. Adoption was a brand new idea for us—now there are five adopted children in our own and in our extended family–but at the time—we were definitely stepping out of our comfort zone.  The lyrics really spoke to me: “ So long status quo, I think I just let go! You make me want to be brave. The way it always was is no longer good enough. You make me want to be brave.” That adoption—and our second one of our then 7 year old son, also from China—were amazing adventures with God—and convinced me that some of the most wonderful experiences of our lives are found when we follow Him out of our comfort zones.

I love that song. And adoption is a big but rewarding step. Thanks so much for dropping by!

Reuniting with the Cowboy by Shannon Taylor Vannatter

Me with my cupToday we welcome award-winning author, Shannon Taylor Vannatter, to discuss her latest release, Reuniting with the Cowboy.

Hello, Shannon! How long have you been writing?

Shannon: Seventeen years.

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?

ShannonI started out writing romantic suspense. But they were heavy on the romance and I stunk at action and fight scenes. After about 2 years, badly written books, and 102 rejections, I attended a conference. The speaker said that whatever genre you enjoy reading most is probably the genre you should write. Duh. It was romance. Once I made the switch and studied the craft, the words flowed out.

What are some of the references you used while researching your book?

ShannonI questioned my vet while he gave my pets their annual shots and watched Dr Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet. Also my dad has always had cattle, so I picked his brain too.

For the medical detail, my husband’s aunt and a man in our church both had the same condition as my character. I knew their stories and looked up the rest on a medical site online.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

ShannonThe animals. I’m an avid pet lover.

What do your plans for future projects include?

ShannonI’m currently writing the 3rd book in this series. It’s set in Bandera, Texas at a rustic log furniture store. There’s a 4th book also and then I need to write up more proposals for future books. They’re all in my head, just have to get them on paper.

Thanks for taking time to speak with us, Shannon!
