What do you love most about the writing process?

I enjoy several aspects of the writing process. First, I enjoy the research that goes into writing my healthy living books. I love to learn, and I take what I learn and put it onto the page in an understandable format for the reader. Another aspect of writing that I enjoy is attending Word Weaver writing groups so others can edit my submission. Their critiques improve my writing.

If you could give advice to your younger writing self, what would it be?

If I were serious about getting a book published, I would hire a professional editor. I called the director of a writer’s conference and asked her who she recommended. Since then all three of my books in my Healthy Living Series have won first place in contests. If I could have afforded it, I would have taken coaching lessons from the editor too.

What does literary success look like to you?

When my books help readers improve their health, that is success. Here is feedback from one of my readers:

“I can’t even begin to tell you how much BETTER I feel since I read Solving the Gluten Puzzle. This truly is the first time in YEARS that I have gone days without stomach pain, upset, etc.  I believe it has to do with understanding what really contains gluten.  So much stuff I never thought about. You are a blessing to many. Thank you for your ministry, and I know, beyond a doubt, this book will change lives.”

What projects can tell us about?

Last year, I finished my Healthy Living Series of books. Earlier this month I released the first book in the Reclaim Your Health series, Solving the Gluten Puzzle.

My 2020 goal is to write the second book in the Reclaim Your Health series about healing food sensitivities and leaky gut. It breaks my heart that 50 percent of Americans have a chronic illness and 40 percent are obese. My mission is to decrease those devastating statistics.

3 Questions Wednesday with Susan Neal

downloadHappy Wednesday! Today the Inspired Prompt welcomes author, Susan Neal. We’re so happy you could join us. First question:

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Susan:  I have several unfinished manuscripts. They were from my early years of writing when I did not know God’s specific calling (or genre) for my writing career. I attempted to write these books before I attended writers’ conferences or joined a Word Weaver Christian Writer Critique group. So I really didn’t know what I was doing.

The first unfinished book was a young adult (YA) historical fiction about the biblical character, Daniel. The second was a YA Star Wars Bible Study.  As I learned more about writing, I realized how much I needed to learn. It reminded me of my relationship with God; the closer I got to Him I realized the further away I was.

Ultimately, I put writing fiction on the back burner because I had so much to learn. I thought I will write nonfiction; it is much easier. So I did. Now I self-published my sixth book, Healthy Living Series: 3 Books in 1.

So glad you found your niche 🙂 Now about advice…

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Susan: I would attend writers’ conferences and join a Christian writing group earlier than what I did. I was writing for years before I attended either. Conferences provide an opportunity to learn about the writing craft, but more than that, we meet other people who are struggling writers like ourselves.

A writers group provides a monthly opportunity for us to have our work critiqued and to meet with like-minded individuals. Writing is a lonely career and many people in our own family do not understand it. The members of my two writers’ groups are near and dear to my heart. We encourage and pray for each other. I am surprised that I have become very close friends with many of them.

What a great asset for writers. Last question:

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

SusanIt is difficult to figure out the specific genre that we are called to write in. For me I started with fiction and moved to nonfiction. I had so many different things I could write about (parenting, YA fiction, hospice, Scripture Yoga™). I didn’t know which one to pursue. Figuring out God’s calling for your writing is essential. For me, I experienced much rejection until I figured this out. I wrote about my journey in this Suite T blog post “Finding Your Writing Path Through Rejection.”

Great Advice! Thanks so much for dropping by!

Indie Publishing: Create and Sell Digital Products

By Susan Neal

Do you have a product that’s not long enough to be a book but would still be valuable to a reader? You can easily create a digital product and sell it on your website or through a link in an article. This blog post will provide step-by-step instructions on how to create digital products, so you can start earning money.

To make a digital product, you need to properly format the document. First, develop a front matter page with a disclaimer, copyright, and notice that the buyer may not reprint or give away this product. Construct a table of contents to correspond with the content of your product. Insert a header with page numbers and title of the product and a footer with a copyright symbol “©—all rights reserved” and your website.

Next, build the back matter including an about the author section and a blurb regarding any other books or products you sell. Include your social media links. Finish up with a colorful cover just like an e-book because the cover is the first thing a potential buyer will see. I use Pro_Ebook Covers on Fiverr.com to design my covers for a minimal cost.

After you format your digital product upload it to Gumroad.com. I have used this company to sell my products since 2016. This business’s website is simple and easy to use.

It is free to create an account and make as many digital products as you want. You are not charged until you sell a product. Gumroad’s fee is 8.5% of your selling price + $.30 per sale. To create a product, click “add a product” under the products tab, and follow the instructions to upload your PDF and cover. Add a compelling description of your item and a price.

Gumroad takes care of the financial transaction and deducts their fees from the payment that they receive from the buyer. You are paid on a monthly basis and the money is electronically deposited. It is that simple, and you do not pay anything until you make a sale.

One of my best selling digital products, How to Prevent, Improve, and Reverse Alzheimer’s and Dementia, contains 24 interventions to prevent these devastating diseases. Every week I receive an email from Gumroad notifying me that another one of my products, like this one, sold.

To add your newly created product to your website Gumroad provides embedded coding for you to install. You copy and paste the code into your site. This company also provides a link for you to use in emails, blogs, and articles, so you can advertise your products.

It is up to you to do the marketing. You can check out four digital products that I sell on my website at http://christianyoga.com/dvd-products. I include links to my digital products in the bio section of my articles and blogs.

Check out my two best selling products on Gumroad:

How to Prevent, Improve, and Reverse Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Eat to Live: with a Low-Carbohydrate, Low-Glycemic, Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Now you can begin selling your digital products as well. For fiction authors, you could sell character sketches and the backstory for your heroine and hero. What other type of digital product could you create? Please share below.

3 Questions Wednesday ~ Susan Neal

Good morning, dear reader. Welcome to another 3QW. Today, we have Susan Neal with us. Susan’s desire is to improve the health of the body of Christ. She is a Certified Health and Wellness Coach with the American Association of Christian Counselors. She published three books, Scripture Yoga a #1 Amazon best-selling yoga book, Yoga for Beginners which ranked #3, and 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates.

Welcome, Susan! Can you describe yourself in three words?

Susan: Happy health-nut. I live a vital, happy life free from disease, low energy, and brain fog because I pay attention to what I eat. My mission is to improve the health of the body of Christ because over half of Americans live with a chronic illness and a third suffer from obesity.

Helping people is always a positive. Great answer. Now . . .

Someone offers you a fully-paid writing research trip to any place you desire to go. Where would it be and why?

Susan: I would travel to the Galapagos Islands to disprove Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Wow. That’s quite a mission.  Last question . . .

What’s your favorite movie?

Susan: My favorite movies are the Star Wars movies. I even wrote, but never published, a Bible study about the good and evil that can be seen within each of these movies. This week I saw the Han Solo Star Wars movie. It was so sad how a significant person in Han’s life chose the Darkside over him.

How to Obtain An Amazon Best-Selling Ranking

By Susan Neal

My previous blog post here on Writing Prompts, Make Your Dream Come True and Self Publish Your Book, described how to self-publish a book on Kindle, CreateSpace, and IngramSpark (Barnes & Noble). Today’s post will walk you through the steps to obtain an Amazon best-selling ranking. You may need to read the previous post to understand Kindle categories, KDP Select, and some other terms.

In 2016, I self-published two books, Scripture Yoga which was a #1 Amazon best-selling yoga book and Yoga for Beginners which ranked #3 in the yoga book category.

How?

First, publish your e-book on KDP.Amazon.com, otherwise, known as Kindle. Choose KDP Select because it allows you to lower your price during your book launch. Your subscription lasts for three months, and during that time you cannot publish your e-book on any other platform. However, you can publish a print book on another site. I unsubscribed from KDP after three months.

Be sure to include a request for a book review, along with a link to your Amazon book page, at the end of your Kindle e-book. The link becomes available after you have published your book. So remember to go back and add this link into your formatted book and reload it into KDP.

When choosing your Kindle categories, select a broad and a narrow category. The narrow one is key to obtaining the high ranking because you do not have as many books to compete against. For example, the broad category for Scripture Yoga was Christian Living which included a large number of other books. However, the narrow category, Yoga, contained fewer books to compete against for the Amazon ranking.

Next, choose two dates to have a $0.99 sale within KDP Select. This sale will show up in the Kindle store on Amazon. The first period should be at the beginning of the three-month subscription to KDP; this is the date you ask your book review team to purchase your book and submit a review. The second date will be your official book launch with the goal of increasing your Amazon ranking and it should be toward the end of the three-month period after you have several book reviews.

Book reviews are an important component of your marketing plan. Create a book review team by asking several individuals if they would like an advanced review copy of your book in exchange for a book review or they could purchase your reduced price book for $0.99. It is best to have at least 7–10 reviews before your book launch. Also, ask your team to share your book’s promotional materials you have created on their social media sites during its launch.

Your book launch goal is to obtain a ranking within the top 100 Amazon books in your category. If this occurs, you can publicize your book as an Amazon best seller. To accomplish this goal, lower your Kindle book price to $0.99 (usually for 3-7 days) after you have at least five reviews. You want to try to get as many purchases as possible within a short period of time for the Amazon ranking to rise. During your launch, monitor your book’s ranking which is listed at the bottom of your book’s Amazon page and take a screenshot as it increases.

There are many of things you can do to plan for this date. However, the most important thing is to pray and ask that your book glorifies God. Next, notify all of your family, friends, social media contacts, and email subscriber list that your book is on-sale. You could raffle a prize, and each person who verified that they purchased your book would be entered into the contest.

At the same time as your book launch, advertise your KDP Select promotion dates on BargainBooksy.com, ReadersInTheKnow.com, and FreeBooksy.com. These websites have access to large numbers of readers who want to purchase books at a discounted price. These promotions will drive up your book sales. At Bargain Booksy, it costs around $25 to run a one-day ad which would be well worth it to attain the best seller status. Whereas FreeBooksy charges a higher price to promote your book, and Readers In the Know allows you to promote your book for free while it is at the discounted price.

There are numerous websites available to market your book including CrossRoads.com, ChristianKindleNews.com, GospelBooks.net, FaithfulReads.com, GoodEbooks.net, and EbookChristian.com. It would be prudent to choose a few of these sites to promote your book during its launch.

Also, advertise your book on KDP.Amazon.com by clicking the “Promote and Advertise” button next to your published book in your account. Select “Create an ad campaign” and click “Sponsored Products.” Sponsored ads show up at the top of a similar themed book’s search results and the very bottom of a competitor’s book product detail page. It is the only ad that is displayed twice. Choose automatic targeting which allows Amazon to choose the keywords.

For my Scripture Yoga ad, I set a bid amount of $.25 and an average daily budget of $2.00. You can increase from there. You only pay if someone clicks your ad. If you monitor this a couple of times a week, it is easy to determine if an ad is working or not. If an ad is spending more than it is making, you can simply pause or terminate the ad.

The morning of my book launch I was at my 88-year-old mother’s home. I woke up early, and for about three hours I sent out many emails and posted to my social media sites. Then I saw a peer’s Facebook post for her book launch and how she was praying for its success.

I realized I had not prayed, so I got on my knees and asked God to forgive my oversight and bless this book’s launch. I felt reassured that it was in his hands. So I drove my mother and three daughters to Homosassa Springs for the day. When I got back to my mom’s home, my book was #1. Praise God!

It takes time and some work, but it pays off when your book is an Amazon best-seller.
